Carolina Furniture Direct is closing after 41 years.

The family-owned Raleigh furniture store is holding a going-out-of-business sale starting Thursday, May 22.

After all merchandise and inventory is liquidated, the owner will retire, according to a press release announcing the closure.

The store is located at 8401 Glenwood Ave.

Everything in the 30,000-square-foot showroom must be sold.

The inventory includes rugs and furniture from well-known brands such as Bassett, Coast to Coast, England, Hickorycraft, Hooker Furniture, Leather Italia, Riverside, Tommy Bahama, Universal, Vaughan-Bassett and Whitewood.

Shoppers will find discounts on a variety of home furnishings, with up to 50% off home accessories.

Furniture stores in the Triangle

Carolina Furniture Direct is the latest family-owned store in the area to shut its doors.

Garner Wayside Furniture, which was founded in 1963, announced in September that it would close, with its owner planning to retire.

And a few years ago, Zebulon’s Whitley Furniture Galleries closed after 113 years. “It’s just time to retire and we don’t have anyone to give it to,” Charles Whitley Estes, a co-owner of the business, told The N&O in 2022.

However, larger furniture chains are expanding into the Triangle.

This year, Bob’s Discount Furniture plans to open six stores in North Carolina, including two in the Triangle. One location will be at Patterson Place in Durham, and another will be at the Crossroads Plaza shopping center in Cary.

The luxury furniture retailer RH (formerly known as Restoration Hardware) opened a new location at Raleigh’s North Hills late last year. The 60,000-square-foot RH Raleigh, The Gallery at North Hills, also has a rooftop restaurant and wine terrace.
