Popular office supplies store closes + Triangle development gets new retail & restaurants
Office Depot is closing one of its Triangle locations soon.
Only days are left before the store at 2011 Walnut St. in Cary shuts down.
Much of the store was empty during a visit on Tuesday, Dec. 3, with whole sections closed to customers with caution tape. The limited merchandise still available — including trash cans, notebooks and backpacks — was on sale.
A large sign placed at the entrance to the store was counting down the days until closing — 10 to go, as of Dec. 3.
Several Office Depot and OfficeMax locations will remain open in the Triangle, including in Raleigh, Apex, Morrisville, Knightdale and Durham. (Office Depot and OfficeMax are both owned by The ODP Corporation.)
Office Depot has been closing locations across the country. In the third quarter, nine stores closed, the company wrote in a November report. Sales were down 15% in the quarter compared to the year prior, a trend “partially driven” by 53 fewer retail locations, lower demand in major product categories, lower average order volume and a drop in online sales, according to the report.
Here’s some other Triangle retail news you may have missed.
First retailer announced for downtown Durham residential tower
Solidcore, a national Pilates chain, is the first retail tenant to join The Novus in downtown Durham.
This will be the second Triangle location for the brand, following its opening at Raleigh Iron Works — a mixed-use project with apartments, restaurant, retail and office space.
The 2,369-square-foot Solidcore studio is expected to open in the 27-story tower at 400 West Main St. in the first quarter of 2025, according to a press release.
The Novus offers around 23,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. On the residential side, it has 54 condo units with layouts of up to five bedrooms, complete with floor-to-ceiling glass, private balconies, chef kitchens and modern bathrooms. Three quarters of the condos have been sold.
It also has 188 apartments available for rent. Leasing will launch soon, according to the press release.
Triangle Rock Club’s newest facility opens in Raleigh
Climbing gym Triangle Rock Club opened Saturday, Dec. 7 at Salvage Yard, near the Raleigh Iron Works development on East Whitaker Mill Road.
It’s the sixth location for the company and the second in Raleigh.
Spanning 40,000 square feet, the Salvage Yard gym includes bouldering terrain and tall rope climbing walls, dedicated spaces for strength and cardio training, a yoga studio and retail space and other amenities such as a sauna and cold plunge.
Find it at 2330 Salvage Yard Drive.
Private club in downtown Raleigh announces closing date
City Club Raleigh, a private club at the top floor of a skyscraper in downtown Raleigh, is closing after 45 years.
The club’s last day will be Tuesday, Dec. 31.
“After considering numerous options for a viable path forward, we’ve made the very difficult decision to close City Club Raleigh,” the club wrote in a social media post.
The Smith Anderson law firm, already a tenant in the tower at 150 Fayetteville St., will renovate and move into City Club Raleigh’s space.
Raleigh entrepreneur launches nonprofit clothing brand
Brooks Bell, a Raleigh entrepreneur and founder of consulting firm Brooks Bell, just debuted a new apparel brand called Worldclass, in partnership with Los Angeles-based stylist Sarah Beran.
Profits from Worldclass will go toward increasing access to colonoscopies in underinsured communities.
Both Bell and Beran were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their 30s, as otherwise healthy individuals. Now in remission, they are working to raise awareness of the screening procedure and its importance to preventing colorectal cancer.
