Chapel Hill’s new Chick-fil-A to hire 100+ employees & late-night mini golf spot opens
It’s not unheard of for malls to have some kind of art installation, even if it’s just visiting.
But soon, one Triangle shopping center will host an interactive exhibit. And yes, parents, it’s OK for little Johnny and Susie to climb on it.
From Sept. 13 through Oct. 21, Los Trompos, or “spinning tops,” is stopping at Durham’s The Streets at Southpoint. The installation will be in front of AMC Theatre.
The art was created by Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena in Mexico City for the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.
Los Trompos includes eight spinning, three-dimensional tops in different colors and shapes, constructed in part by fabric woven in a traditional Mexican style. Several people can sit on each top at the same time.

Chapel Hill gets another Chick-fil-A
It’s The News & Observer’s Tammy Grubb’s pleasure to share the news that Chick-fil-A is opening soon in Chapel Hill.
This new restaurant, which replaces a longtime K&W Cafeteria, will open Sept. 5 at University Place mall, off Fordham Boulevard. It features two drive-thru lanes and a dining room.
The franchise owner, Nate MacDonald, also operates the Chick-fil-A at Renaissance Village in Durham. And initially, about 125 employees from the Durham restaurant will staff the Chapel Hill location, as the Durham store is being remodeled.
Eventually, MacDonald will hire more than 100 full- and part-time employees to staff the Chapel Hill location.
Kendra Scott plans new store at Fenton
Popular jewelry brand Kendra Scott is expanding its Triangle footprint with a new store in Cary.
As of Aug. 28, the Fenton location is expected to soft-open in late October, with a grand opening planned for November. However, those dates may change, a Kendra Scott customer care specialist told The N&O in an email.
This will be the brand’s third Triangle location, adding to the shops at Raleigh’s North Hills and Durham’s The Streets at Southpoint.

Mini golf opens at popular downtown Raleigh beer garden
The Raleigh Beer Garden is known for its expansive collection of brews. But now, there’s another reason to visit.
Hop Shots Putt Putt is now open at 614 Glenwood Ave.
Yes, adult beverages are available. Yes, the course stays open past midnight, as does the bar. But Hop Shots is family friendly.
Niall Hanley, whose Hibernian Hospitality Group operates the venues, said he’s seen plenty of kids running around with clubs, while parents enjoy a cold one, deeming the place a “new age kindergarten.”
North Hills: Clothing store opens & updates on other retailers
- Clothing store Madewell is now open at the Main District at North Hills.
- J. Crew is expected to open later this year.
- Starbucks in the Lassiter District is still closed for renovations.
- Construction is ongoing at Foxcroft Wine Co. and Captain Cookie and the Milk Man, both coming to the Lassiter District.
