Wegmans shoppers will soon be able to take advantage of a new feature.

The grocery store on Wake Towne Drive in Raleigh, which opened in 2019, is getting a pharmacy.

A public relations representative for Wegmans told The News & Observer via email that construction is underway at the pharmacy, which is expected to open this summer.

“At Wegmans Pharmacy, our goal is to provide incredible customer service and care to our customers, along with convenient ways to manage and access prescription medications and immunizations,” Marcie Rivera, the public relations representative for the grocer, said in an email.

Services available at Wegmans pharmacies

There are four ways to pick up medications from the grocer’s pharmacy, according to Wegmans’ website:

  • In store
  • Home delivery: Medications typically arrive within five business days, according to Wegmans’ website.
  • Same-day delivery: Wegmans partners with Instacart to deliver prescriptions to customers in as little as one hour.
  • Curbside pick up: After ensuring that a prescription is ready and paying over the phone, customers can park in one of the designated pharmacy pickup spots in the Wegmans parking lot. Wegmans will bring the prescription to the customer’s vehicle. Just have your ID ready.

Shoppers can also receive immunizations at pharmacies. Wegmans’ website lists about a dozen immunizations offered at in-store pharmacies:

  • COVID-19
  • Herpes Zoster (shingles)
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Influenza
  • Meningococcal
  • MMR (measles, mumps and rubella)
  • Pneumococcal (pneumonia)
  • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis)
  • Varicella (chicken pox)

Visit the Wegmans website to check eligibility requirements for the vaccines.

History of Wegmans pharmacies

The first Wegmans pharmacy opened in the location on Lyell Avenue in Rochester, New York, in 1972. As of 2022, the grocer operated 97 pharmacies in six states.

Over the years, the grocer added new features to its pharmacies. Wegmans began allowing people to refill or transfer prescriptions over the phone and then online. Just over a decade ago, Wegmans rolled out the home delivery program, and the curbside pickup option was added during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pilot programs for immunizations began in the 1990s.
