Which Raleigh area grocery stores offer senior discounts? A guide for shoppers 60 & up
The Triangle is home to more than a dozen major grocery stores, each vying for shoppers’ attention — and business.
Grocers spread news of their low prices and philanthropic efforts, donating to food banks and other local organizations. They offer different ways to shop, allowing customers to order online and pick up in store or even get groceries delivered to their home. And they have loyalty programs and credit cards that provide perks to customers who shop at their stores.
While many retailers make money-saving programs available to all customers, a couple have savings options just for seniors.
We contacted 15 grocers with locations in the Triangle to ask about discounts available for seniors. Most retailers told us that they don’t have money-saving offers for seniors only. A few stores, including Lowes Foods, Walmart, Target and Whole Foods, did not answer The News & Observer’s questions.
Here are the Triangle grocery stores that offer deals for senior shoppers.
Senior discounts at Harris Teeter
Harris Teeter shoppers may already be aware of the store’s VIC (very important customer) cards, which give members access to savings on advertised products, among other deals. Customers who sign up for emails from Harris Teeter get additional eVic deals.
But shoppers who are 60 years old or older get even more special perks with a VIC card.
- Every Thursday, seniors get a 5% discount on all purchases except for fuel, pharmacy, tickets and gift cards. The discounts apply after all coupons and VIC discounts are deducted.
Harris Teeter has more than a dozen stores across the Triangle. Find one near you using the company’s store locator.
Senior discounts at Publix
There are several ways to save money at the Florida-based retailer, The News & Observer previously reported, including through the Club Publix rewards account and Publix app.
- But the grocer also offers a 5% discount for customers aged 60 and older every Wednesday.
Publix has stores in Raleigh, Cary, Apex and Durham. Three more are expected to open in 2025 in Raleigh, Garner and Rolesville.
