Popular activewear store opening soon in Raleigh’s Village District

A new activewear store is coming soon to the Triangle.

FP Movement is expected to open early this summer at Raleigh’s Village District, the shopping center formerly known as Cameron Village.

The retailer will be located in an almost 3,000-square-foot space at 501 E. Daniels St., near Jos. A. Bank and Harris Teeter. FP Movement’s space was formerly occupied by Coastal Knot Bridal.

Eric Davidson, a senior manager for communications at Regency Centers, which owns the shopping center, said in an email to The News & Observer that Village District is now 100% leased.

Triangle Free People locations

The FP Movement coming to Raleigh is the first for the Triangle and the second for North Carolina, with the other brick-and-mortar in Charlotte. There are Free People stores at Fenton in Cary and at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham, as well as one in Charlotte.

FP Movement is one of the brands under URBN, along with Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Anthropologie Weddings, Terrain, Menus & Venues and Nuuly.

Recent Village District developments

  • Another business expected to open this summer at the Raleigh shopping center is Postino WineCafe, a wine bar with locations across the country. Postino plans to open a store in Charlotte, along with the one in Raleigh, The News & Observer previously reported.
  • A five-story, 53-unit condominium building is coming to the area, The N&O previously reported. The Lansing at 101 Enterprise St. will offer units ranging from 825 square feet to 2,394 square feet, with one-bedrooms starting at $500,000. Amenities at the Lambert Development project are expected to include 10-foot-wide folding glass doors opening onto a private terrace for each condo, a club room, fitness room, private storage and car charging stations.
  • In August, The N&O reported that a 115,000-square-foot hotel from the Curio Collection by Hilton Hotels would be built at the intersection of Woodburn Road and Cameron Street. Named for Oberlin Village, one of North Carolina’s largest and longest-surviving freedman’s villages, the Oberlin Hotel will house 153 guest rooms and presidential suites.

About Village District

Village District celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Built in 1949 on property formerly owned by the Cameron family, the district changed its name from Cameron Village in 2021, The News & Observer previously reported. The renaming was done to drop the shopping area’s connection to the Camerons, whose wealthy patriarch, Duncan Cameron, was one of the largest holders of enslaved people in North Carolina during the Civil War.

It wasn’t just the shopping center that took a new name, however. In 2022, Cameron Village Post Office was renamed Oberlin Village Post Office, and Cameron Village Regional Library became Village Regional Library. The library at 1930 Clark Ave. is now called Oberlin Regional Library.

According to Regency Center’s website, the Raleigh shopping center has more than 600,500 square feet of retail space. A few of its tenants include grocery stores Harris Teeter and The Fresh Market, Walgreens and Goodnights Comedy Club. When bookseller Barnes & Noble opened in 2021, it was the first location to open in the Raleigh area in 18 years, The N&O previously reported.
