Party in Airbnb? Some North Carolina houses have new noise monitors

Airbnb will provide hosts in North Carolina free noise detection devices to prevent Halloween parties, the company announced Wednesday.

The company temporarily banned parties in 2020 and permanently banned them in June of this year, according to a news release.

The noise detectors will be provided in collaboration with Minut. The devices look like smoke detectors and can detect decibel volume and crowd size, according to Minut’s website.

Airbnb said the devices won’t monitor conversations.

The company reported a 59% year-over-year reduction in party reports in North Carolina following their other anti-party measures, according to the company’s release.

To ensure there are no Halloween parties, Airbnb will also prohibit guests without a history of positive reviews from renting an entire home for one day, the release said.

“In North Carolina over 2,900 people were deterred by our various anti-party defenses from booking entire home listings over Halloween 2021,” Airbnb said.
