Gas prices once again spiked above the $4 per gallon mark across North Carolina this month.
These charts show how fuel costs have changed across the state and how North Carolina stacks up against other states struggling with the ever-rising price for a gallon of gas.
Gas prices in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill over time
A gallon of gas began costing over $4 across Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham counties on May 6, according to data from AAA. The cost has not dipped below $4 since then.
▪ Wake: The price of gas has increased nearly 9% in Wake County since May 6. It’s spiked nearly 40% since Jan. 19, when gas cost $3.13 in Wake.
▪ Durham: The price of gas has increased 9.3% in Durham County since May 6. It’s spiked 38.8% since Jan. 19, when gas cost $3.17 in Durham.
▪ Orange: The price of gas has increased 9.4% in Orange County since May 6. It’s spiked nearly 38% since Jan. 19, when gas cost $3.18 in Orange.
▪ Chatham: The price of gas has increased 9.2% in Chatham County since May 6. It’s spiked over 40% since January 19, when gas cost $3.12 in Chatham.

Lowest, highest gas prices in North Carolina
In North Carolina (as of May 24), gas prices range from $4.26 to $4.56 per gallon, according to data from AAA.
▪ Highest price in NC: Hyde County at $4.56 a gallon.
▪ Lowest price in NC: Montgomery County at $4.25 a gallon.
Triangle counties sit in the middle. Here are the lowest and highest prices in the Triangle:
▪ Johnston County is $4.37 per gallon.
▪ Wake and Chatham counties are $4.38 per gallon.
▪ Orange County is $4.39 per gallon.
▪ Durham County is $4.40 per gallon.
Diesel, regular gas prices in North Carolina
The statewide average cost for a gallon of diesel and regular unleaded gas has been rising since May, according to data from AAA.
▪ Diesel: $5.53 per gallon on May 23.
▪ Regular unleaded: $4.38 per gallon on May 23.
How North Carolina gas prices stack up against other states
The average price for a gallon of gas on May 24 is nearly $4.60, according to AAA’s Gas Prices website.
The average price of gas in North Carolina is about $4.37, according to the website.
