In a state that’s practically considered the barbecue capital of the South, it’s no surprise that one of North Carolina’s most popular BBQ restaurants is getting Michelin recognition.

For years, Sam Jones BBQ has been a staple spot for North Carolina-style wood-fired whole hog barbecue. Now, it’s got bragging rights as a Michelin Bib Gourmand pick in the New South guide.

Even if you’re not a ‘cue connoisseur, I’d say the restaurant’s flavor and flair extends beyond the pit. Like many other local foodies, I’ve had my taste of Sam Jones’ smoke house favorites.

So for our latest “On A Budget” series, I was eager to dig into some of the hidden gems on the menu aside from its prime barbecue picks.

In my opinion, you’d be missing out if you didn’t do the same.

Sam Jones menu

Considering that Sam Jones is a third-generation pitmaster of the legend behind Skylight Inn, it felt like the obvious choice was the 1947 Burger — a replica of the OG from his grandfather’s restaurant.

Keeping with our series’ $25 spending limit, I ordered the $12.99 burger and homemade chips as the side with a bottled Coke, bringing my total to $17.86 before tax and tip.

But … after spotting a scoop of banana pudding brought out to another table, I immediately scooted to the counter to order my own for dessert — bringing my total cost to $24.34.

Let me tell you, it was the sweetest $5.99 splurge I’ve ever made.

1947 Burger

The burger, prepared with American cheese, onion, tomato, lettuce, pickles, mustard and ketchup on a toasted bun, was flavorful with just the right amount of fresh and saucy toppings on a thick patty from the griddle — a perfect compliment to the crispy, crunchy chips I munched on between every bite.

As far as the banana pudding, it’s only one of two desserts on the menu but excellent enough to single-handedly satisfy your sweet tooth. Honestly, it was the highlight of my meal.

Using his mother’s recipe, it’s a delicious take on the classic dessert with layers of Nilla wafers, sliced bananas, topped and baked with meringue.

I must also give an honorable mention to Sam Jones’ catfish sandwich, and a shoutout to my boyfriend and fellow foodie who let me steal several bites of the buttery sandwich with hand-breaded, fried fish garnished with lettuce, tomato and tarter sauce. When ordering, the team member told me it was one of their most popular non-barbecue picks, and I have to agree.

Sam Jones cost

No matter what (or how much) you’re craving, there are a wide variety of menu options to choose, most of which cost less than $25.

From the pit, you’ve got barbecue and chicken trays for $12.59, along with smoked wings ranging from $11.99 to $19.99 for six or 12. There are sandwiches and small plates ranging from $7.99 to $12.99. On the pricier side, Sam Jones’ smoke house plates, served with two sides and a choice of sweet potato muffin, cornbread or toast cost between $15.59 and $22.99.
