  • Permits have been filed, but not issued, for a new Taco Roos restaurant in Raleigh.
  • The restaurant would move into a former Subway on Western Boulevard.
  • Cook Out’s menu differs from Taco Roos’, which serves items such as tacos and quesadillas.

Plans to bring a Cook Out sister brand to Raleigh seem to be moving forward.

A permit for electrical work at a potential future Taco Roos is “ready for issuance,” according to the City of Raleigh’s development portal.

The permit, however, has not been issued. It is associated with a “parent” alteration permit. The electrical permit won’t be released until the parent permit is reviewed and approved, and all fees paid, city spokesperson Julia Milstead told The News & Observer in an email.

If all permits move forward, it appears that Taco Roos will be constructed at a former Subway on Western Boulevard in Raleigh. But there’s no indication as to an opening date yet.

According to the electrical permit, construction at the old sandwich shop at 3940 Western Blvd. include new finishes in the restrooms, changes to the kitchen and a reduced dining room, accommodating only seven seats.

The Cook Out customer service representative reached by phone on Wednesday, Oct. 22 didn’t have any information about a Taco Roos on Western Boulevard in Raleigh — a site which Cook Out owns, Wake County real estate records show.

What is Taco Roos?

There are Taco Roos restaurants in Wilmington and Thomasville, according to the company’s website and the customer service representative reached by The N&O.

The Western Boulevard location would be the first Taco Roos in the Triangle. Permits for Taco Roos locations have also been filed in Charlotte.

It’s unlike Cook Out in its menu, replacing burgers and corn dogs, with tacos and burritos. But similar to Cook Out, Taco Roos serves cheap fare.

The restaurant offers several varieties of tacos, available with ground beef ($3), grilled or fried chicken ($3), grilled or fried fish ($4) or sauteed or fried shrimp ($4). Other options include quesadillas and burritos ($2-$3), and nachos ($4).

Tortilla chips with a choice of dip — queso, guacamole, salsas, sour cream and cilantro adobo — are available as add-ons for $2.50, and black or refried beans, Spanish rice, Southern coleslaw and celery seed coleslaw are sold as sides for 79 cents each.

Cook Out is famous for its many milkshake flavors, but Taco Roos serves ice cream sundaes ($4) for dessert. Upgraded drink options at Taco Roos include smoothies ($4) and lemonades made with cut strawberries, pineapple, blackberries or cherries ($3).
