Raleigh pie shop named one of the best in the South by Southern Living has a new location
There are moments for cake and moments for pie.
Friday is certainly a pie day.
A Raleigh pie shop with a national presence will open a new location in time for Pi Day (3.14), linking up with an established cake shop.
Slice Pie Company has moved into a new shared bakery space at 606 N. Person Street in Downtown Raleigh. Slice will share the space with cake shop Sugar Euphoria, owned by baker Randi Smith.
“I think it’s clever,” Slice owner Kristen Mullins said of sharing space with cake shop Sugar Euphoria. “You couldn’t pay me enough to make a cake; I just want to pump out pies. I think it’ll help elevate us both in some capacity.”
Owned by baker Kristen Mullins, Slice has been in business for a decade, with pies served on the menu of some Downtown Raleigh restaurants and shipped across the country through Slice’s online store. Mullins is known for particularly artful crust designs and has been shouted out in taste-making magazines like Southern Living, which named it one of the region’s best pie shops.
Late last year, Slice outgrew its storefront at 1400 S. Saunders St. in Raleigh, moving out in late December. Mullins said production is mostly done at an off-site baking facility and that the new Slice shop will be part of the company’s plan to add more retail storefronts in the area.
For the first one, Mullins said she likes Slice’s new location on a foodie corridor in Raleigh.
The new Slice location is located across from the iconic Person Street Krispy Kreme, making it a dangerously sweet block. Pies are available for pickup Wednesday through Saturday starting at 8 a.m.
“It’s literally the perfect case scenario for me,” Mullins said. “It seems to be the right move with the right location. There’s a lot of walking traffic....I’ve wanted to build community (around Slice).”
For the auspicious grand opening of Pi Day, Mullins said the shop will offer mini pies, slices, whole and half pies. The full menu is still being worked out, but you can expect pecan, apple (which won a blue ribbon at the NC State Fair), sweet potato, coconut cream and chocolate chess.
