Led by a collection of Black-owned businesses, a block in East Durham continues its development momentum with the addition of the neighborhood’s first brewery.

This week, Proximity Brewing opens its new taproom on Driver Street, launching as Durham’s first Black-owned brewery.

Owned by Mike Potter, best known for creating the annual beer festival Blacktoberfest, Proximity will hold its grand opening Friday, Dec. 15, at its taproom and production space at 491 S. Driver St.

The new brewery builds on the growing number of Black-owned restaurants and bars along Driver Street, following the reopening of Rofhiwa Book Cafe and the opening of Congress Bar and Mike D’s BBQ.

Proximity is open seven days a week and specializes in IPAs, offering around a half-dozen different styles of the wildly popular craft beer.

The grand opening event is from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 15 and features music, food trucks and appearances by local drink expert Che Ramos, known as the Black Bourbon Guy and Melanated Wines.
