A popular Durham food truck (and a bakery) expand to Raleigh development
A popular Durham food truck that later became a brick-and-mortar location in the Bull City will expand for the first time to Raleigh, joining a retail redevelopment project near NC State University.
The Dankery, known for its specialized trays of chicken tenders, wings, shrimp and more, will join the project lineup at 2526 Hillsborough St., occupying the former Wing It On! space, project developers said in a press release this week.
The Dankery opened in Durham in 2016 as a food truck, serving dinner and late-night foods all over the city — and becoming especially popular during the early days of the pandemic — before opening a sit-down concept in Durham’s Hayti District in 2021.
Taking inspiration from local chicken and fried food havens like Cook Out and Heavenly Buffaloes, The News & Observer has reported, the restaurant serves up top sellers including hand-breaded crispy chicken tenders, fries with impressive toppings like bacon and crabmeat, and a popular fried chicken sandwich.
Also joining the redevelopment project at 2526 Hillsborough St., developers announced, is Crumbl Cookies, the specialty, Instagrammable cookie brand that originated in Utah and has since expanded to more than 600 stores in 47 states.
The brand’s bakeries offer a weekly rotation of four to five specialty cookies, with the signature milk chocolate chip flavor remaining a constant on the menu.
The Crumbl location on Hillsborough Street will be the sixth in the Triangle and the fourth in Raleigh.
The 2526 Hillsborough St. location, adjacent to NC State, was purchased by Carolina Capital, a Charlotte-based private equity real estate firm, in late 2021. Developers are in the “planning stages of significant building renovations” for the space, which will inclue “storefront upgrades and a mural by renowned artist Lisa Gaither.”
Additional tenants in the building include local Asian restaurant Bul Box and NC State.
