Live roaches & flies in Raleigh: This week’s Triangle sanitation scores (Aug. 2)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly round-up of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties for the week of July 26-Aug. 2.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 100 restaurants were inspected between July 26-Aug. 2.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Five restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Bonefish Grill (2060 Renaissance Park Pl., Cary) received a score of 88% during an inspection on July 26.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 16 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to 1.5 points.
  • Violations included raw fish being stored directly above mango salsa in a cooler; multiple soiled plates, containers and utensils being stored as clean; salmon being served at an undercooked temperature; and multiple containers of watermelon and stuffed olives being stored past seven days.
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 97.5% in March, a 96% in July 2021 and a 94% in February 2021.

Don Beto’s Tacos (421 Chapanoke Rd. #105, Raleigh) received a score of 88% during an inspection on July 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 13 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to three points.
  • Violations included several food items being stored at too warm of a temperature, some prepared foods missing date markings and wet metal pans being stored as clean.
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 91% in April, an 88% in February and a 94% in November 2021.

El Tapatio (13200 Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh) received a score of 88% during an inspection on July 27.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 23 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to two points.
  • Violations included employees returning to the kitchen from outside and not washing their hands, several foods being held at incorrect temperatures, several ready-to-eat foods not having proper date markings and many live flies being present in the kitchen.
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 95% in March of this year and October 2021, and a 94% in August 2021.

Mecca Market (3913 Western Blvd., Raleigh) received a score of 85.5% during an inspection on July 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 12 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to three points.
  • Violations included an employee “talking on the phone pressed to the right side of his face while actively using the saw to cut meat with bones for a customer,” several foods being held at incorrect temperatures and the walls and floors of the facility not being clean.
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 96% in April, a 95.5% in November 2021 and a 94% in August 2021.

Wang’s Kitchen (3416 Poole Rd. #132, Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on July 29.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 16 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to 1.5 points.
  • Violations included dishes with wet and dry food debris being stored as clean, several foods being held at incorrect temperatures, several foods not having proper date markings and several live roaches being present in the kitchen.
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 93% in May, a 93.5% in January and a 91.5% in August 2021.

No restaurants in Wake County received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows that 40 restaurant inspections were completed between July 26-Aug. 2.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Church’s Chicken (3400 N. Roxboro Rd., Durham) received a score of 84.5% during an inspection on July 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 16 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to three points.
  • Violations included leaks coming from the ceiling above where the chicken is cooked, a black oil-like substance dripping onto cooked chicken, the ice machine being soiled with pink and black debris, an employee working with food without wearing a hair restraint and multiple flies in the kitchen.
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 92% in January and a 93% in June 2021.

No restaurants in Durham County received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that five restaurants were inspected between July 26-Aug. 2.

All five restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Johnston County sanitation scores

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 29 restaurants were inspected between July 26-Aug. 2.

All 29 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
