‘Badly molded foods’: This week’s Triangle restaurant sanitation scores (April 12)
The News & Observer publishes a weekly round-up of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle spots.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.
You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.
Here are sanitation scores in Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties for the week of April 5-12.
Wake County sanitation scores
The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 79 restaurants were inspected between April 5-12.
▪ All 79 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Durham County sanitation scores
The Durham County inspection management system shows that 19 restaurant inspections were completed between April 5-12.
▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
▪ Two restaurants received B grades, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
Emely Restaurant (1541 Glenn School Rd., Durham) received a score of 88% during an inspection on April 5.
- The restaurant was in violation of 14 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to two points.
- Violations included “badly molded foods” being stored in the walk-in cooler, raw foods being stores above ready-to-eat foods and numerous foods not being properly date-marked.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.
The restaurant previously scored a 92% in November 2021.
James Joyce Irish Pub & Restaurant (912 W. Main St., Durham) received a score of 85% during an inspection on April 11.
- The restaurant was in violation of 15 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to three points.
- Violations included a dog water bowl being stored inside an employee handwashing sink, raw foods being stored next to ready-to-eat foods, several foods being stored at the wrong holding temperature and the weekly menu lacking proper consumer advisories for certain foods such as lamb burgers.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.
The restaurant previously scored a 92% in October 2021, a 94% in April 2021 and a 95.5% in February 2021 and December 2020.
▪ No restaurants in Durham County received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.
▪ No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Orange County sanitation scores
The Orange County inspection management system shows that 17 restaurants were inspected between April 5-12.
▪ All 17 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Johnston County sanitation scores
The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 18 restaurants were inspected between April 5-12.
▪ All 18 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
