Dirty dishes and black residue: This week’s Triangle sanitation scores (March 29)
The News & Observer publishes a weekly round-up of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle spots.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.
You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.
Here are sanitation scores in Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties for the week of March 22-29.
Wake County sanitation scores
The Wake County sanitation grades database shows 100 restaurants that were inspected between March 22-29.
▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
▪ Two restaurants received B grades, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
The Wild Cook’s Indian Grill (3212 Hillsborough St., Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on March 24.
- The restaurant was in violation of 22 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to 1.5 points.
- Violations included the restaurant not having a certified food protection manager on site, dishes and skewers being stored with debris on them, some foods being stored at the wrong holding temperatures and some foods being marked with incorrect dates.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.
The restaurant previously scored a 91.5% in October 2021, an 87.5% in June 2021 and a 91.5% in December 2020.
Wonderland Tapas and Cocktails (222 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh) received a score of 88.5% during an inspection on March 23.
- The restaurant was in violation of 18 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to 1.5 points.
- Violations included some foods not being stored at the proper temperature, raw foods being stored over ready-to-eat foods, several pans and utensils having “food debris and residue accumulation” present and black residue being present in the ice machine and on the soda gun at the bar.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.
The restaurant previously scored a 97.5% in December and June 2021, and a 97% in February 2021.
▪ No restaurants in Wake County received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.
▪ No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores
The Durham County inspection management system shows that 26 restaurant inspections were completed between March 22-29.
▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
▪ Two restaurants received B grades, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
Hong Kong (4711 Hope Valley Rd., Durham) received a score of 84.5% during an inspection on March 25.
- The restaurant was in violation of 11 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to four points.
- Violations included an employee taking an order at the point-of-sale, then preparing food without washing their hands first; an employee touching cooked noodles with their bare hands; and “many” containers with food debris being stored as clean.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.
The restaurant previously scored a 90.5% in October 2021, a 91% in June 2021 and a 93.5% in October 2020.
Wendy’s (295 W. N.C. Hwy. 54, Durham) received a score of 88% during an inspection on March 23.
- The restaurant was in violation of 15 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to two points.
- Violations included one employee picking up a phone from the floor, then preparing food without washing their hands; another employee handling money at the register, then preparing food without changing gloves or washing their hands; a salad container having mold in it; and employees not wearing hair restraints.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.
The restaurant previously scored a 90% in November 2021 and a 91.5% in May 2021.
▪ No restaurants in Durham County received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.
▪ No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Orange County sanitation scores
The Orange County inspection management system shows that 21 restaurants were inspected between March 22-29.
▪ All 21 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Johnston County sanitation scores
The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 35 restaurants were inspected between March 22-29.
▪ All 35 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
