Live and dead pests: This week’s Triangle restaurant sanitation scores (March 8)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly round-up of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties for the week of March 1-8.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows 100 restaurants that were inspected between March 1-8.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Two restaurants received B grades, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Tropical Picken Chicken (404 E. Six Forks Rd., Raleigh) received a score of 89% during an inspection on March 1.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 23 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to three points.
  • Violations included several foods being stored at improper cooling temperatures, food thermometers not working properly and bathrooms and handwashing sinks not having paper towels.
  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 94.5% in October 2021, a 95% in April 2021 and a 93% in January 2021.

Wang’s Kitchen (4701 Atlantic Ave. #129, Raleigh) received a score of 88% during an inspection on March 3.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 22 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to 1.5 points.

  • Violations included foods being stored at improper temperatures and several foods not being date-marked. “Live pests” were found in “an unused ice machine” and on a “flip-top cooler to the left of the soup,” and the inspector also found traps “full of dead pests” underneath a cooler.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.

  • The restaurant previously scored a 91% in August 2021, a 92.5% in May 2021 and a 91.5% in January 2021.

No restaurants in Wake County received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.
