The Triangle’s french fry trend is staying hot, as a Raleigh brand expands to Durham
Durham is set to double the number of fry bars in the city, as a Raleigh brand expands.
The Buena Papa Fry Bar, the Triangle’s first french fry-centric concept, will open its second location in the food court of the Streets at Southpoint mall.
The first Buena Papa opened last year in Raleigh’s Morgan Street Food Hall, but its owners James and Johanna Windon always planned a larger expansion.
“It has been our dream to watch Buena Papa grow, and with the overwhelming response we have received at Morgan Street Food Hall — we knew it was only a matter of time until we would start expanding and adding new locations,” the husband and wife owners said in a news release. “The Streets at Southpoint is the perfect dining destination to reach more people and share our culture and love for family and fries.”
Plates of loaded fries have long been a mainstay on menus of certain restaurants, doing for crispy fries what nachos did for tortilla chips.
Suddenly, though, fries have become a restaurant concept in the Triangle, starting with Buena Papa and continuing with Mr. Fries Man on Main Street in Durham. The future Emmy Squared in Durham’s Brightleaf Square also features a menu with a dedicated section of waffle fry platters.
Buena Papa’s fry combinations are centered around Colombian and Latin flavors, with the intro basket named El Colombiano, where fries are topped with refried beans, fried pork belly, chorizo and guacamole. Other fry toppings include meatballs, nacho cheese, pernil pork, tzatziki and pulled pork.
The new Buena Papa will open in Southpoint this spring, keeping weekday hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
