Retired Barn Cat Meets a Taxidermy Bobcat-Then Things Get Weird

Barn cats live their lives with a specific set of rules that don't necessarily apply anywhere else. Bringing one of these somewhat feral felines inside the house may come with a few challenges as they adjust to everyday "civilian" life, where things aren't as primal.

This is what a newly retired barn cat named Cookie is trying to do, but there's a catch. While she can't stand the resident Sphynx kitty who begs for Cookie's acceptance, she found a friend in, of all things, a taxidermy bobcat. This is about to get very, very weird!

The funny moment that @brenbates4 caught on camera shows Cookie falling head over heels for the mysterious new guy! He doesn't have to try very hard to get her attention because her barn cat instincts are going off. I'd say this is the start of a beautiful new romance!

You'd think that Cookie hasn't been inside long enough to adapt to all the exciting, random objects in the house, but as far back as January 2025, the inquisitive Tabby cat has had a taste of what domestic life is like.

I guess all that time spent securing the perimeter is still a big part of her. You can take the cat out of the barn, but not the barn out of the cat!

Why Cats Become Fascinated With Unusual Objects

We can chalk up Cookie's admiration of the taxidermy cat to her predatory instincts, but many kitties become fascinated with random things. Along with the typical kitty curiosity and her ongoing need for environmental stimulation, like she had while patrolling the property as a barn cat, if something has a certain sound, texture, or scent, it triggers her need to hunt, chase, pounce, and kill.

The sensory stimulation alone is enough for a cat to explore new, interesting objects, and they're notorious for testing cause and effect (e.g., pushing things off a counter). Whether it's because they're bored, to keep their surroundings safe from predators, or because they're a little weird, cats like Cookie couldn't pass up something like a taxidermy bobcat.

I'd be willing to guess Mr. Bobcat's particular brand of smell reminds Cookie of being outdoors. So, when she stumbles onto a quiet, handsome, excellent listener who loves to cuddle without complaint, she's going to make her move! Give them some privacy, please!
