How to Make Biodegradable Planter Pots Out of Cardboard Boxes
A TikTok shared by creators Jeff & Lauren (@jeffandlaurenshow) shows how to turn cardboard boxes into plant pots.
Here's what you'll need for this hack:
- Cardboard, such as an Amazon box
- Water
- Bathtub or large container to fill with water
- Drinking glass
And here's how to make your planters:
- Remove all tape, stickers and any other debris from your cardboard.
- Cut the cardboard into long strips, about 1 foot wide.
- Briefly soak the cardboard strips in water until they are completely wet.
- Lay a wet cardboard strip on your work surface.
- Place the glass in one corner of the cardboard, and roll the cardboard around the glass, like you're rolling up a yoga mat. When you get to the end, fold the edges of the cardboard flat over the opening of the glass, forming the bottom of your planter.
- Stand up to let dry. Then, remove the glass, revealing your new pot.
Because these planter pots are made entirely from cardboard, they are biodegradable and safe to put directly into the ground. That said, if you do intend to plant your cardboard pots, make sure you thoroughly remove all tape and debris from the box before starting this DIY.

There Are So Many Benefits to Using Biodegradable Planter Pots
Making your own biodegradable cardboard pots is a great way to reduce waste. Not only is it less resource-intensive than buying new biodegradable planter pots from the store, but it's also far less resource-intensive than buying plastic pots.
According to BioPoly Lab, using plant-based planter pots can also have a number of benefits for your garden. These pots can help support root development and water regulation, as well as prevent your seedlings from experiencing "transplant shock" when you put them in the earth.
