These two NC coastal spots were voted among the nation’s top ‘secret beaches’
Two North Carolina beaches were named among the top 100 secret beaches in the United States in a reader poll conducted by vacation website Family Destinations Guide.
Carova Beach and Ocracoke Island came in at #23 and #30, respectively. The top five spots went to beaches in Hawaii, Florida and New Jersey.
“Not only do these hidden gems offer a chance to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere, but they also provide a unique opportunity to discover a world of natural beauty that is often overlooked by the usual well-known crowded beaches,” Rose Ackermann of Family Destinations Guide said in a release.
“Whether it’s exploring a secluded cove or relaxing on a stretch of sand with only the sound of waves crashing against the shore, these hidden beaches offer a chance to create unforgettable memories with loved ones while experiencing the true beauty of the natural world.”
Hidden gem beaches in North Carolina
Family Destinations Guide surveyed 3,000 families in the United States, determining a list of 100 hidden beaches they most wanted to visit this upcoming summer. Carova and Ocracoke Island landed in some top spots.
Here’s what to know about our area’s high-ranking secret beaches:
▪ Carova Beach: This Currituck County beach borders Virginia, about 10 miles north of Corolla Beach. It’s about a four and a half hour drive from Raleigh.
“Carova Beach is a beautiful and secluded destination that is perfect for nature lovers and those looking for a quiet escape. The beach is unique in that it is accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicles, which adds to its secluded atmosphere,” said Family Destinations Guide.
“The beach is also known for its wild horses, which are believed to have been descendants of Spanish Mustangs that have been roaming the area for centuries. In addition to the wild horses, Carova Beach also boasts beautiful sand dunes, wide stretches of pristine white sand, and calm, crystal-clear waters.”
▪ Ocracoke Island: This beach is only accessible by ferry (or small plane), tacking some scenic commute time to the drive from the Triangle. It’s roughly a six hour trip from Raleigh, including time spent on the ferry.
Free ferries run to Ocracoke from Hatteras Island all summer long. The trip takes about 40 minutes, and wait times may average one to two hours, Ocracoke Guide says. For more information about getting to the remote island, visit ocracokeguide.com/getting-here.
“Ocracoke Island boasts miles of pristine beaches, dunes, and marshlands, providing a serene and peaceful environment for visitors to explore. The island’s untouched natural beauty is complemented by a rich history and unique culture, with a quaint village at the heart of the island that is home to locally owned shops, galleries, and restaurants,” said Family Destinations Guide.
“Visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, surfing, fishing, and boating, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun. With its unspoiled landscapes, historic charm, and peaceful atmosphere, Ocracoke Island is a true hidden gem of the North Carolina coast.”
