2012 Rihanna-Led Action Film Soars to the Charts Despite Box Office Flop
Movie adaptations of books, video games and even board games remain ever popular in Hollywood these days.
Nearly 15 years ago, a big-budget action film hit theaters that was based on the classic guessing game Battleship, which we all probably played at one point in our childhoods.
Made for over $200 million, the movie of the same name was loaded with stars and thrilling sequences - but that doesn't always guarantee critical and commercial success.
Battleship (2012) made $303 worldwide but lost both Universal and Hasbro roughly $150 million, ScreenRant reports. That being said, we're in the streaming era, and the film is seeing signs of life these days on Prime Video.
After a full month on the platform, the Liam Neeson and Rihanna starrer currently sits at No. 8 on the Top 10 Movies in the U.S. list. Directed by Peter Berg, the action flick also stars big names such as Jesse Plemons and Brooklyn Decker. Here's the synopsis offered by Rotten Tomatoes, where Battleship holds a 54% average audience rating:
"Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is a weapons officer aboard the destroyer USS John Paul Jones, while his older brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgård), is the commanding officer of the USS Sampson. Unknown to Alex, Stone or the rest of the U.S. Navy, alien invaders have arrived on Earth with plans to steal Earth's resources. When a confrontation with the invaders knocks out the Navy's radar capability, American and Japanese forces must work together to find a way to save the planet."
Rihanna, 38, made headlines last month when she paid the ultimate tribute to her three young children by taking one of their artful designs and turning it into permanent body art-specifically a new tattoo on the back of her leg.
In an Instagram post, the popular New York City tattoo studio Bang Bang Tattoo shared several images and video clips from Rihanna's recent tattoo session. The caption on the post reads: "Family tats @badgalriri Designed by her babies ♥️"
