‘Hamilton’ previously smashed DPAC records. It’s coming back to Durham in late December.

While the world’s turned upside down, the Durham Performing Arts Center offered a hopeful glimpse at what normalcy looks like on the other side. Namely, when “Hamilton” is coming back to town.

On Monday, DPAC announced the dates for “Hamilton’s” return engagement in Durham. The Broadway blockbuster will play in the Bull City from Dec. 30, 2020 to Jan. 24, 2021.

Tickets go on sale Monday, April 13 to DPAC season ticket holders. Details will be announced later for how everyone else can score tickets.

The Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning “Hamilton” came to DPAC in 2018, setting all kinds of records for the Durham theater, selling out all 32 performances, with more than 86,000 people seeing the show. The hip hop-inspired musical depicts the founding of America through the story of Alexander Hamilton, from the American revolution to Hamilton’s duel with Aaron Burr.

In announcing “Hamilton’s” Durham dates, DPAC offered a bit of good news for the Triangle’s entertainment industry, which has seen nothing but cancellations for the past month, including major festivals and concerts.

DPAC itself has suspended performances through April 30, complying with Durham’s stay-at-home order.

DPAC’s announcement falls on the same morning the original cast of Hamilton put all of our Zoom calls to shame.

Actor John Krasinski of “The Office” assembled the original cast of “Hamilton,” including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and star Leslie Odom Jr., to sing the musical’s opening number to a young fan from Jacksonville, Fla., who was disappointed the “Hamilton” local stop had been canceled due to the coronavirus.

On his YouTube show “Some Good News,” Krasiniski promised the young girl tickets to “Hamilton” on Broadway, plus airfare to New York once the pandemic subsides.
