An early morning gas leak shut down streets in downtown Durham for several hours Sunday after a van struck a commercial gas meter on a building in the 300 block of E. Main St.

Durham Fire Department personnel responded to the crash around 2:15 a.m. and found an active gas leak, Durham officials said. They determined no one was in the building and secured the area. Enbridge Gas Co. crews stopped the gas leak by 4:30 a.m., they said.

Emergency crews remained on the scene, clearing gas from the building. The area has since reopened to traffic.

Two people who were in the van when it crashed were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, officials said.
