Carrboro police released security camera photos of a suspect Saturday in the case of an attempted rape on a greenway near downtown early Thursday morning.

The victim, a woman in her 30s, told police that she was walking her dog on the Frances Shetley Bikeway between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Thursday when a man attacked her. The greenway is between North Greensboro and Shelton streets.

The woman said the man appeared to be about 40 years old, Black, 5’ 6” to 5’ 10” tall and with a medium build. He was wearing a gray hoodie and dark pants, police said in a news release.

Police said the areas of interest include:

  • Hillsborough Rd between N Greensboro St and W Main St.
  • Pine St
  • N Greensboro St between Estes Dr and Hillsborough Rd.
  • Estes Dr. between N Greensboro St and Village Dr.
  • Williams St/Wilson Park.
  • E Poplar Ave between Ashe St and Elm St.
  • Ashe St between Carrboro Elementary School and E Poplar Ave.
  • Elm St between E Poplar Ave and the Frances Shetley bike path.

The woman was taken to UNC Hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police are waiting for her to be released from the hospital before questioning her further.

The woman’s midsize dog ran away during the attack but was found later, police said.

No arrests have been made, police said, and they are urging the public to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities. The bikeway is a popular off-road route through residential areas for residents and for students walking to Carrboro Elementary School.

Police have also notified the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools about the incident. The investigation is continuing, police said.
