Duke professor wins an Emmy for documentary work on Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton

Duke University professor Phil Bennett won an Emmy last week for a PBS “Frontline” special he co-produced last year.

“The Choice 2016” consisted of profiles of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, the 2016 candidates for the presidency. The specials investigated “what has shaped the candidates, where they came from, how they led and why they want to be president.” It originally aired in September 2016 and was directed by Michael Kirk.

Last year Bennett talked about the stories producers uncovered about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to Kelly Brownell, Dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke.

Bennett is the Eugene C. Patterson Professor of the Practice of Public Policy Studies and Journalism at Duke. He is also the director of Duke’s Rutherford Living History Program.

“Frontline” won three additional Emmys at the 38th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony held on Oct. 5 – for the episodes “Yemen Under Siege,” “Children of Syria” and “Saudi Arabia Uncovered.” In total, 12 PBS programs won awards. PBS had 48 nominations.
