A 14-year-old girl was fatally struck by an SUV while crossing N.C. 55 in Holly Springs Wednesday evening, officials say.
The girl entered the road unexpectedly, and the driver was unable to stop, said town spokesman Mark Andrews.
The driver stopped after the accident occurred, Andrews said, and is not expected to be charged.
On Thursday, the girl was identified as Scout Undercoffer, an eighth-grader at Holly Grove Middle School, reported ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner.
”This is a tragic loss,” Principal Janiece Dilts said in an email to parents. “Scout was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by the students and staff here at Holly Grove Middle School. Our thoughts are with the family and friends during this tragedy.”
The accident occurred around 5 p.m., shutting down traffic, Andrews said.
Undercoffer was struck in the northbound lane, but police blocked the highway’s northbound and southbound lanes near Teal Lake Drive, Andrews said.
Southbound lanes reopened soon after 6:45 p.m. Northbound lanes were open by 7:30 p.m., Andrews said.
The accident happened the same day as two other pedestrians were fatally struck in the Triangle.
