A man wearing a black ski mask and holding a gun walked past the large glass window striped with bars, opened the door to the Smoke 4 Less store, pointed his gun and shot the store’s clerk in the arm.

The clerk, who appeared armed and ready, returned fire.

Now police investigators are trying to identify the masked shooting suspect and on Thursday released surveillance video of the 8 p.m., Sept. 28 attempted robbery at the store on Avondale Drive.

The suspect, who fled without taking anything, was described as a black male with a skinny build. He was wearing a black mask, dark clothing and brown Timberland boots.

Police believe the suspect was more successful at a second, later robbery attempt.

About thirty minutes after the Smoke 4 Less incident, officers responded to an armed robbery report at the Hardees restaurant at 4607 S. Alston Ave. A man wearing a mask and armed with a gun entered the business and demanded money, police said. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The description of the suspect was the same as the description of the man who attempted to rob the Smoke 4 Less store.
