A vehicle accident at the intersection of NC 55 and Interstate 40 caused major traffic delays Tuesday morning.

A Tuesday morning motorcycle crash on N.C. Highway 55 left one man dead.

Johnathan David Oneal, 33, of Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene, said police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

The accident occurred where N.C. 55 intersects with Interstate 40.

Shortly before 7 a.m. Benjamin Parker Brandenburg, 44, of Durham, attempted to make a left turn onto I-40 while driving 2013 Ford transit van. The van collided with a southbound 2016 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Oneal.

Brandenburg was treated at the scene by EMS.

Officers cited Brandenburg for misdemeanor death by vehicle, Michael said.

The southbound lanes of N.C. 55 were temporarily closed due to the wreck. Additionally, police shut down the eastbound exit ramp from I-40 East onto N.C. 55. There were long traffic delays for many Triangle commuters traveling to work.

Police said the investigation of the crash is ongoing.
