13 people lost their homes in a 3:05 a.m. apartment fire here Sunday.

A two-story building at the Seven Oaks Apartment Homes complex at 200 Seven Oaks Road Durham was ablaze Sunday when Durham firefighters arrived at the scene. Durham Fire Department Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi said a “heavy fire” was evident as DFD engines approached the scene, flames coming out of windows on both sides of the building’s two floors.

Thirty-three firefighters battled the fire and hampered its spread, getting it under control within 17 minutes. Some stayed on the scene to monitor the situation for up to three hours. Iannuzzi said no injuries were reported.

The blaze was caused by unattended cooking and the apartment of origin suffered severe damage. Some adjacent apartments suffered moderate amounts of smoke and water damage, Iannuzzi said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the 13 people displaced by the blaze.
