A section of East Main Street remained closed Tuesday afternoon due to an underground gas leak, according to the Durham Fire Department.
No injuries have been reported. Officials don’t know when they will reopen the section of Main Street between Briggs Avenue and Gary Street, wrote Chris Iannuzzi, deputy chief for the Fire Department in an email.
At 1:30 p.m. the Durham Fire Department was dispatched to an odor of gas called in by an employee at Y.E. Smith Elementary School, Iannuzzi wrote.
The fire department found readings of gas in the area and notified PSNC Energy of a suspected underground leak. PSNC arrived and confirmed an underground leak below East Main Street

Students and staff at Y.E. Smith were not endangered, but student pickup and bus departures were affected due to the closure of the street, Iannuzzi wrote.
