Noel Summers Pitsenbarger, 49, was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of Hillsborough Road.
Police spokesman Wil Glenn said a preliminary investigation indicated the incident was a suicide.
Pitsenbarger was lying on the railroad tracks when he was struck, Glen said.
The site of the accident is near the intersection of Hillandale Road and Hillsborough Road. The tracks are south of Hillsborough Road and north of the nearby Durham Freeway.

The train was carrying 68 passengers, and was traveling from Charlotte to Raleigh at the time of the accident. None of the passengers or crew on the train were injured.
The train was apparently the Piedmont 76 which was scheduled to have departed Charlotte at 5:15 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Raleigh at 8:36 p.m., according to Amtrak’s schedule.
Glenn said the investigation into the accident are continuing, and no further details were available Sunday morning.
