Police offer safety tips after indecent exposure incident is reported near American Tobacco Trail

The Durham Police Department said late Wednesday that it is investigating an indecent exposure incident that happened around noon near the 100 block of the American Tobacco Trail (near the 1-mile marker and West Enterprise Street).

After the incident, a woman told investigators that she and her two children were approached by a black male from the opposite direction shortly after 12:15 p.m. The man exposed himself as she walked past him. The victim fled on foot as she attempted to ignore the suspect.

The suspect was described as a black male in his 20s, approximately 6 feet tall and 180 pounds with short hair. He was wearing a black jacket and dark jeans.

No injuries were sustained.

The Durham Police Department offered the following personal safety tips:

• Be aware of your surroundings

• Call 911 to report any suspicious activities

• Do not walk alone

• Try to remain in well-lit areas

• Trust your instincts

• Do not walk/run with earbuds or headphones

• Bring a cell phone
