The Holly Springs Town Council approved a development plan Tuesday night for a new Lowe’s Home Improvement Store and Garden Center and Wegmans grocery store.

The 138,504 square foot Lowe’s and 99,000 square foot Wegmans will be built near the intersection of N.C. 55 and Ralph Stephens Road, pending a final greenway location, the town said on its website.

The News & Observer called Wegmans on Thursday for a possible opening date and other details about the Holly Springs store. A spokeswomen did not return the call and had said in February that the company does not comment until it has signed a lease or purchase agreement.

A town spokesman, however, said they are excited about the grocer coming to the town of about 37,000 people.

“We’re looking forward to it,” spokesman Mark Andrews said Thursday. “They did not give a projected opening date, even though it sounded like they wanted to go forward as soon as possible.”

The developer will widen Ralph Stephens Road and Wildwood Farm Way, build a superstreet intersection on the N.C. 55 Bypass and install a traffic signal at the Ralph Stephens Road and Wildwood Farm Way intersection, the town’s website says.

Wegmans is expanding into the North Carolina market, The News & Observer has previously reported. The Rochester, N.Y.-based chain has stores planned for Raleigh, Wake Forest, Chapel Hill and two locations in Cary. Its first store, on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, is scheduled to open this fall.

In other business Tuesday, the Town Council approved the 2019 Strategic Plan, “which outlines the town’s vision, priority areas, goals and initiatives designed to meet the current service needs of the community and prepare for the future,” the website says.
