Scooter driver dies in Durham crash

Durham police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred Wednesday afternoon on University Drive near Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard.

The accident happened about 1:55 p.m. when Joshua Johnson, 33, of Durham was driving a scooter south on University Drive and collided with the side of a northbound 1996 Dodge driven by James Byrd of Alpine Road in Durham. Byrd was trying to make a left turn onto Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard and turned in front of the scooter, according to investigators.

Johnson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Byrd was not injured.

The investigation is still ongoing.
