No charges for officer in Ocampo death
Durham District Attorney Leon Stanback said Thursday morning that no charges will be filed against an officer who shot in July a Hispanic man holding a knife.
On July 27, four Durham Police Officers responded to a stabbing at 806 Park Ave. One
officer stayed with the victim while the three other officers investigated. The officers' attention was
drawn to a man in the immediate area with what appeared to be blood on his outer clothing.
Officers approached Jose Adan Cruz Ocampo and attempted to engage him in conversation. At that
point Ocampo retrieved a knife from his back pocket. Witnesses reported that officers directed
the man to stop and put the knife down. Officer Ronald Mbuthia fired his service weapon
Jose Adan Cruz Ocampo died immediately of a gunshot wound to the head. A responding
firefighter removed a black-handled kitchen knife from Mr. Ocampo's right hand. An internal
Durham Police Department investigation followed, as well as an external investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.
