DURHAM -- United Way of the Greater Triangle announced Thursday morning in downtown Durham that its 2010 campaign goal is $17.5 million.
The goal exceeds the $17.02 million the United Way raised during its 2009 campaign.
Triangle CEOs and companies running campaigns as well as several smaller businesses and community leaders joined United Way partner agencies and staff as the announcement of the goal.
Attendees watched this year's campaign video about Xavier, a young man who went from homeless to college through the guidance of those at United Way partner service agencies. Xavier's mother addressed the crowd about how proud she is of her son who is now a freshman at UNC Charlotte.
Although United Way of the Greater Triangle's campaign runs in workplaces through the end of 2010, the organization raises funds throughout the year to help the 158 programs in its 88 partner agencies serving Durham, Johnston, Orange and Wake counties. One of every four residents in these counties is using a United Way partner agency service or program. Programs and services assist with helping ensure the basics for a good quality of life including education, income, health and safety.
In 2009, the United Way saw a 30 percent increase in volunteerism throughout the Triangle.
Nearly 75 percent of the 2009 campaign funds came from employees donating to their workplace campaigns. Corporate gifts accounted for 20 percent of the total, with special event revenue and individual donations making up the balance.
