DURHAM -- Durham Parks and Recreation will host a free, public community day and official grand opening celebration for Walltown Park Recreation Center, 1308 W. Club Blvd. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Festivities will include an official ribbon cutting ceremony, food, music entertainment, class demos and guided tours.

According to DPR Director Rhonda Parker, the center was designed to provide opportunities for residents to gather, learn, exercise and connect with family, friends, and neighbors. "Walltown is a remarkable addition to the Walltown community, said Parker. "This center will provide many ways for the community to Play More!"

The newly renovated Walltown Park Recreation Center is 26,000 square feet and was funded by the 2005 General Obligation Bond. The facility features a gymnasium with bleachers, a fold-out stage for performances and a mezzanine-level walking track. Other amenities include a teen center, a senior center, a computer lab, a dance studio, a culinary teaching kitchen and a multi-purpose space.

The Center will officially open on Wednesday and will offer youth and teen after-school programs Monday-Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Other programs will be available once the center is fully staffed. The target date is Monday, Oct. 4. Adult activities will also be offered and include socials, bowling and movie trips and chair exercise classes.

Parking is available at St. James Baptist Church, 1305 W. Club Blvd. For more information, call (919) 560-4355.
