Grand opening: To celebrate its opening in Northgate Mall, Northgate Books, the new, used and rare books store by the owner of Falls River Books in Raleigh, will host a grand opening Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by refreshments and live music.

At 4,300 square feet, Northgate Books is the fourth and largest store yet by owner Steven Elliot. Falls River Books is 1,600 square feet. Elliot also has opened stores in Miami.

Northgate Books has partnered with Ingram Books to provide new releases. The store is in the former Waldenbooks space near the outdoor plaza.

Northgate Books isn’t the only bookstore set to open in the mall. Urban Books, owned and operated by a best-selling author, will specialize in African-American bestsellers and be near Sears.

More at Northgate: Steven Elliott, owner of Northgate Books, has more than books in his plans.

Elliot is also leasing the Blue Coffee Too space in the mall. The eatery, which opened just last June and was an outgrowth of Blue Coffee Café in downtown, has closed. Elliot is renovating and expanding the seating capacity for a new eatery: The Sweet Tea Café.

The concept will focus on fresh produce from the Durham Farmers’ Market. Sweet tea will be served (of course), and there will be quiches, sandwiches, desserts and fresh fruit.

The Sweet Tea Café, near the children’s train in the mall, won’t be too far from Northgate Books.

Elsewhere in the mall;

- EZ Records has opened across from Hibbett Sports carrying music, movies, posters and magazines.

- Greek Cuisine is doubling its square footage and moving to a new location in the food court.

- Tomo Japan will be opening in July, featuring Japanese cuisine cooking on the front counter.

- Cute as a Button is a new kiosk near the food court featuring baby apparel and accessories.

Closing: Ashley Furniture is closing at Westgate Shopping Center.

According to Furniture Today, owners said the lease on the 35,000-square-foot showroom is expiring soon, and the company is considering other sites in the Triangle for relocation.

An employee confirmed the news this week but said the closing date was uncertain.
