CHAPEL HILL -- Pat McCrory, former Charlotte Mayor and likely GOP gubernatorial candidate in 2012, has endorsed Ryan A. Hilliard of Chapel Hill for state Senate in the 23rd District.
Hilliard, a Republican, is challenging seven-term Democrat Sen. Ellie Kinnaird of Carrboro.
"North Carolina needs more leaders in the General Assembly who understand the proper role of state government," McCrory wrote in support of Hilliard, who describes himself as a "common sense conservative."
"Ryan will give the citizens of Orange and Person counties a North Carolina senator who will work for lower taxes, the elimination of wasteful spending, finding free-market solutions to growing our economy and creating more private sector jobs, and protecting our individual liberties."
"We appreciate the support of Mayor McCrory and other North Carolina leaders who understand the need for a return to responsible leadership in the General Assembly," Hilliard said. "North Carolinians want to see their constitutional liberties protected and more private sector job opportunities, which will only happen with a new, limited government perspective in Raleigh. We can't afford big government in North Carolina at the expense of the people."
