CHAPEL HILL -- The Family Advocacy Network (FAN), a program of the Mental Health Association in Orange County, is seeking professionals who work with families of special needs children to facilitate two-hour educational clinics for its 2010-11 calendar.
Topics of interest include the field of mental health, psycho-pharmacology, parenting and family communication skills, transitioning adolescents to adulthood, special education services and other related subjects.
Meetings typically take place the second Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon at Orange United Methodist Church, 1220 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Participants include parents of special needs children with emotional or behavioral disorders, mental illness, learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, or at-risk youth, as well as professionals who provide services to this population.
Seminars should include audience interactions that will keep participants engaged. Presenters should bring their own LCD project for PowerPoint presentations. Hand-out materials are an important tool and appreciated by participants.
The FAN-MHAOC is a nonprofit organization. In the spirit of community service, facilitators are asked to waive their traditional rate structure and donate their expertise in an effort to help families in the area. In exchange, the FAN offers a $50 honorarium to help offset travel and handout expenses. The deadline to submit workshop proposals is July 31. For a submission form, contact Julie Bailey at julie@mhaorangeco.org, or call (919) 942-8083, ext. 2.
