The following is excerpted from a letter to the Durham County Board of Commissioners from all 53 Durham Public Schools principals:

Durham Public Schools experienced significant budget cuts last year. The cuts were made in teaching positions (over 200), as well as funds for staff development, technology, instructional supplies and central services' positions. As principals, we have worked diligently to mitigate the impact of these cuts on students and their ability to achieve success.

Our school system has worked to improve student achievement in many different ways over the past several years. We have enjoyed significant gains in student achievement, as well as a decrease in the dropout rate. Additionally, we have had more students participate in a variety of innovative learning programs. It is our mission and our desire to continue improving our efforts. ...

If there are additional cuts at the school level for next year, there will be a direct adverse impact on the work we do with students. As critical decisions are made, it is essential that we remember to keep children at the heart of all decisions. As adults, we know that a teacher can truly change the life of a child forever. Thus, it is essential that Durham Public Schools have access to the most talented, qualified and compassionate teachers that we can find. Additionally, we must provide students and teachers with an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning.

If our schools face additional budget cuts for the 2010-2011 school year, there will be a large price to pay in terms of the success of our children, as well as the success of our community. We believe that our public school system impacts Durham's work force, the real estate market, tourism and our ability to present Durham as "A place where great things happen." We strongly eblieve a negative impact on schools is a negative impact on our community.

We trust that as you make decisions concerning next year's budget, you will consider the impact of financial decisions that may cause us to compromise the effectiveness of our instructional program that the Durham community has come to expect. We, in return, can assure you that as school leaders, we will continue to lead our schools in a positive direction and do all we can to support all that is great about Durham.
