DURHAM -- Duke senior Jon Scheyer made the shot that sealed the ACC Tournament for the Blue Devils, but overall he didn't make as many shots at the tournament as he had throughout the regular season.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski think he knows what could get Scheyer back on target for the NCAA Tournament, which opens for the Blue Devils on Friday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7:25 p.m., WRAL).
"When you handle the ball, you can fall into running the team and looking out for everything, and then when your shot comes, not giving your shot full attention," Krzyzewski said. "I've talked to Jon about it and have watched tape with him. I said, 'There's nothing wrong with your shot. I think there may be something wrong with your preparation.'
"That's what can happen with the ballhandler."
In three games at the ACC Tournament, Scheyer hit just 13 of 40 field goals, including a 5-for-21 showing from 3-point range. His career numbers in the NCAA Tournament are in the same range: 18 of 57 from the field, including 9 for 31 on 3-pointers, in six games.
"Towards the end of the year, I was over-thinking a little bit, thinking about calling plays or getting my teammates involved," Scheyer said. "Naturally throughout the year, I was thinking about scoring or shooting.
"Once I bring the ball up the court, my mindset needs to change."
Krzyzewski quickly discounted one popular theory for Scheyer's late-season shooting numbers.
"The very first thing people say is that his legs are tired. Then why does he make the shot at the very end of the game?" Krzyzewski said. "I think that's a bunch of bologna."
