The Duke Lemur Center is competing with other ideas that include public gardens, a school wind turbine, reforesting a park, raising awareness of household plastics and developing a recyclable surfboard. The top 10 ideas will receive funding. Voting ends March 31.

DUKE LEMUR CENTER PROPOSAL:
Goals:
* To increase the number of guests to the center by 50 percent.
* To create an inspiring tour path easily accessible to all guests.
* To build four additional state-of-the-art outdoor animal habitats.
* To prevent the extinction of more than 70 species of lemurs.
* To use lemurs to enlighten guests about all endangered animals.
The "Path to Tomorrow" project creates a setting where guests to the Duke Lemur Center learn of the lemurs' plight. The center plans a walkway that is accessible and safe for guests and habitats that are comfortable and safe for animals. Interactive displays will help professional and volunteer tour guides inform the public about the plight of lemurs and ways the public can help.
Breakdown of grant money:
$23,800: installation of an ADA concrete path
$17,000: animal housing
$3,500: interactive displays
$3,200: Electric and plumbing service to new animal habitats
$2,500: safety barriers
