DURHAM -- Two Duke University police officers who were involved in shooting a man outside Duke University Hospital have been placed on paid administrative leave, and the still-unidentified victim's body is at the Office of the Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill, according to Duke officials.
David Jarmul, associate vice president for news and communications at Duke, said in a release that Duke's report on the shooting is expected "sometime next week."
Duke Police Chief John Dailey could not be reached for comment Monday.
The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday outside the front entrance of the hospital at Erwin Road and Fulton Street, Dailey said.
Dailey said there was "no immediate indication" that the victim was "an employee, patient or patient family member."
He said the two officers had an altercation with a person on the hospital grounds that led to the shooting. He said one of the officers suffered minor injuries and was treated.
Duke police said they were providing counseling for the two officers, Larry Carter and Jeffrey Liberto.
They said the shooting had caused no interruption of patient care or hospital operations and called it an "isolated incident" that occurred outside the hospital and posed no ongoing safety or security issue.
"Our first priority is the safety and security of our patients, visitors, students, staff and others," Dailey said. "We plan to review the results of the investigation carefully to ensure our procedures are appropriate and solid."
