King's returns: The hot dogs and burgers will be back before long at King's Sandwich Shop, and they will be grilled up by one of the eatery's former chefs.

T.J. McDermott, the new owner of the tiny hot dog shack at the corner of Geer and Foster streets, said a cook from 15 years ago will join his staff when the shop opens, hopefully before summer.

McDermott said Kings will be offering some of the old favorites, including fried bologna sandwiches and bratwurst.

McDermott, a former project manager for the City of Durham, has been busy refurbishing the building originally constructed in 1942. He has put in a new roof and installed new equipment but kept some old details, like the original sunburst backsplash, that will be on the wall behind the grills.

King's Sandwich Shop closed in January 2007 after decades of catering to baseball fans going to the nearby Durham Athletic Park to catch a game.

McDermott's new shop will also be named King's Sandwich Shop and will begin by serving lunch, eventually also adding breakfast to the menu, he said.

The sandwich shop will add to the enlivened DAP area, where a new music venue is under construction and local developer Bob Chapman is planning to refurbish the old Gulf station on the southeast corner of Geer and Foster streets.

A Web site is under construction at www.kingssandwichshop.com.
