DURHAM -- A joint meeting of all 13 garden clubs of the Durham Council Of Garden Clubs was held at the Doris Duke Education Center of Sarah P. Duke Gardens on Tuesday.
The group of more than 100 ladies was welcomed by Council President Jean Gurtner, and Council Second Vice President Mary Denson introduced speaker Bryce Lane.
Lane is a national award-winning instructor in the Department of Horticultural Science at N.C. State University and has earned the university's Outstanding Teacher Award three times. He is also the host of "In the Garden" on WUNC TV.
An outstanding program on the best British gardens was presented, featuring Bath -- the "City of Flowers" -- and nine National Trust properties.
The American-turned-British horticulturist, Maj. Lawrence Johnston, designed Hidcote Manor Garden in Gloucestershire in 1910 using the "Garden Room" concept.
At Great Dixter House & Gardens in East Sussex, the house dates back to the 15th century and the term "Potscaping" was coined by Christopher Lloyd in his garden of mixed borders and color combinations. Lane also included in his program the Chelsea Garden Show which has 11 acres of displays, 600 exhibitors, 52 display gardens, and 160,000 visitors.
