GREENSBORO — For the second straight day at the topsy-turvy ACC Tournament, the higher seed won just one of the four games.
For the second straight day, the exception involved a team wearing blue.
Top-seeded Duke opened Friday’s action with a 57-46 triumph over Virginia at Greensboro Coliseum to advance to today’s semifinals, where the Blue Devils will be joined by a trio of lower-seeded survivors.
Thursday, North Carolina was the lone lower seed not to advance.
Duke will take on No. 12 seed Miami (1:30 p.m., WRAL), which knocked out No. 4 Virginia Tech 70-65 to become the first 12th-seeded team to make it to the weekend in tournament history.
In the evening session, N.C. State continued its surprising run as the No. 11 seed, taking out No. 3 Florida State 58-52.
The Wolfpack will face No. 7 Georgia Tech today (3:30 p.m.), which knocked off co-regular season champion and No. 2 seed Maryland 69-64 to virtually seal an NCAA Tournament bid for the Yellow Jackets.
No team seeded lower than No. 6 has ever won the ACC Tournament, but at least one team seeded lower than No. 6 is now guaranteed to advance to Sunday’s championship game.
