DURHAM -- Fire damaged a duplex apartment in East Durham Thursday night during which "an older man" who apparently had been "staying there" was seen running from the blaze, fire officials reported.

Firefighters from the Durham Fire Department were called to the two-story duplex at 1012 E. Geer St. at 9:39 p.m. and extinguished the fire quickly, according to Battalion Chief Stephen Whitt. Flames were coming from the rear of the duplex when firefighters arrived.

About 21 firefighters responded and cleared the scene about 11 p.m.

No one was injured.

No one was at the duplex when firefighters arrived, and neighbors, who reported the blaze, were interviewed, Whitt said.

There was heavy damage to the first floor of both sides of the duplex, and smoke and water damage to the second floors, he said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
