Governor's Club is a private, gated, upscale community, located in Chatham County, just outside the Chapel Hill city limits. It is nestled on Edward's Mountain, which is complete with rolling hills, lush landscape, well manicured gardens, and some of the most exquisite homes in the Triangle. The residents come from diverse backgrounds ranging from retired executives to younger couples still actively pursuing careers and raising families. Sound like the picture perfect place to live? Think again!

After months of controversy, and a community vote, Governor's Club decided to execute a deer-killing program. An Ad Hoc Deer Committee concluded that plants and flowers were the only issue and that we weren't overpopulated with deer. The committee recommended using deer repellents, netting/fencing, and simply to not plant foliage that deer would nibble on. However, the Architectural Review Board won't allow these precautions because it's not aesthetically pleasing. Posting No Hunting/No trespassing signs is also not allowed, although our individual insurance carriers say we must post to protect ourselves from liability.

My husband and I moved here seven years ago, we were impressed with the unique topography, the beauty of the wooded lots, and the presence of the wildlife. Seeing the occasional deer in our yard was a message of peace, tranquility, and the balance of nature. This is being taken away from us. Although we signed community documents stating a "NO WEAPONS" rule, this no longer applies. Governor's Club is now a private hunting preserve.

We are living the pretense of perfect community. Friends and neighbors are divided because of ethics and personal integrity. Being associated with a community that has so little regard for life is sad. This was Governor's Club's opportunity to set an example for the surrounding communities using alternative, nonlethal methods in managing wildlife. A tragic situation!
